How to Get a Refund From DoorDash

It is frustrating when DoorDash delivered the wrong meals or missing orders. If your DoorDash order was wrong, never came, or you need to cancel or change it, you obviously want a refund.

There’s no reason to let that money go to waste. However, DoorDash does have a strict refund policy. If everyone requested refunds, it would be too easy to take advantage of the service for a free lunch.

How to Request a Refund on DoorDash

To get a refund from DoorDash, cancel your order by using their app and go to the Order Status page and tap on Cancel Order. If you want to use Live Chat to cancel the order, you can go to Contact Us page>click on the Chat icon.

DoorDash limits when you can cancel orders so that if food is already prepared they can still pay the restaurant.

DoorDash does give refunds within reason and customer support agents can offer them at their discretion. Your best bet at getting a refund is to contact support directly and explain your situation in a kind and calm manner.

To get a refund from DoorDash via the app:

  1. Open the app
  2. Log in to the Order Status page
  3. If available, click Cancel Order
  4. DoorDash will refund you your money to your card

To get a refund from DoorDash via phone:

  1. Call DoorDash customer service at 855-973-1040 
  2. Explain why you would like a refund
  3. The customer service agent will connect you with the right resources to get a refund

To get a refund from DoorDash via live chat:

  1. Visit the Contact US page on the DoorDash website
  2. Click the Chat icon
  3. Explain why you are having issues and request your money back
  4. The customer service agent will connect you with the right resources to get a refund

You can request a refund from DoorDash if you cancel the order or an order is incomplete or never arrived. If the refund is approved, it can take a few days to process.

Sometimes DoorDash may give you credit for future orders instead of a refund. Credits are available on your account immediately and will automatically apply to future orders.

DoorDash gives refunds for canceled orders; however, you can only cancel DoorDash before it is prepared in the restaurant.

If you cancel after a driver is assigned, you may only be given a partial refund. DoorDash also offers credits or re-orders in the case of missing or incomplete orders.

Credits are posted to your account immediately, but refunds can take up to seven days to show on your bank statement.

Your account can get flagged if you cancel or request refunds regularly on DoorDash. They can deactivate your account if they suspect you are taking advantage of refunds for a free meal.

How to get a Refund from DashPass

You can get a refund for a DashPass subscription fee if you cancel your subscription within 48 hours of purchasing it, or within 30 days of purchasing an annual subscription.

You can cancel your subscription to DashPass at any time from the DoorDash app or website. To avoid future charges, you must cancel DashPass at least one day before your next renewal date.

You will still have access to your DashPass benefits until the end of the current billing period unless you cancel during a trial period, in which case you will lose access to DashPass immediately.

To cancel DashPass:

  1. Open the app
  2. Tap your account icon
  3. Go to Manage DashPass
  4. Click End Subscription
  5. Confirm by selecting End Subscription

Although the $10 a month might be worth it for free delivery, if you are not using DoorDash enough then it makes sense to cancel it.

How Long Does It Take to Get Refund From DoorDash?

DoorDash refund can take five to seven business days for the bank to process the refund request. DoorDash refunds are processed immediately; however, they can get held up at the bank. How soon you receive your refund will depend on the processing time of your bank.

Charges on your bank statement may still appear as ‘pending’ and it can take up to three days for these charges to be removed from your bank statement. Pending charges have not been processed, and they mean funds have not been taken from your account.

Refunds will appear as a negative charge on your bank statement. Partial refunds will still post as charges to your account but will be for less than the original price of the order.

DoorDash account credits, on the other hand, are available to your account immediately and will automatically apply to your next order.

Types of Refunds from DoorDash

DoorDash can either refund all of your money, give you a partial refund, give you a credit towards your next order, or issue a re-delivery so you can get a freshly prepared order.

Regardless of whether you get a refund or a credit, DoorDash will email you confirmation for the refund/credit issue date and amount.  

Full Refund

If you cancel your order within a few minutes after ordering, you are likely to get a full refund from DoorDash. However, if wait until after a driver has been assigned and the restaurant has confirmed your order, you likely will not get a full refund.

How DoorDash Credits Work

DoorDash credits are like coupons for your next order. They are available on your account immediately and will automatically cover your next order – including a tip.

Partial Refund

If a driver or restaurant has already confirmed your order, then if you cancel you will at most only be refunded for the delivery charge and tip. That is because DoorDash still has to pay the restaurant and cover some costs for the driver’s time to go to the restaurant.


If you are missing an item from your order, or it is just late, and you still want the food, then DoorDash can issue you a re-delivery of your items. That is rare but can happen if you speak to customer support.

DoorDash Full Refund, Partial Refund, No Refund

DoorDash has no obligation to refund you for canceled orders once you have paid for the order. Completed and delivered orders are considered non-refundable; however, in certain circumstances, DoorDash customer service can allow refunds at their discretion.

If you do cancel a DoorDash order, before the food has been prepared, then they will refund you your money. Note that if you want to cancel, you can only do so before the restaurant starts preparing your food.

Additionally, if you cancel a DoorDash order after a driver is assigned or after the restaurant confirms the order, but before the food is prepared, then you may only receive a partial refund. 

To cancel a DoorDash order:

  • Open the app
  • Log in to the Order Status page
  • If available, click Cancel Order (If this option is not available, it means the restaurant has already started preparing your order and you cannot cancel it)
  • Once the cancelation goes through, DoorDash will refund you your money

If Delivered Order is Wrong or Incomplete

Sometimes you may not receive all the items from your order, either from negligence from the driver or the restaurant. If you are sure you paid for an item and it is not included in your order, then you can reach out to the DoorDash Customer Support team and they will either issue you a re-delivery, credit or a refund.

To report missing items or an incomplete DoorDash order, follow these steps:

  1. Open the app
  2. Go to Orders
  3. Select the incomplete order
  4. Tap Help in the corner of the page
  5. Under Issues, select Missing Items and select the specific items missing from your order
  6. Add additional information to the Details section
  7. Submit the report

You may receive a refund for that item, or DoorDash may apply a credit to your account.

Additionally, if your order never arrived you can follow the same steps and under the Help tab select Order Never Arrived instead. You will get some automated questions and the option to join a live chat with a support agent who will help you get a refund, credit, or new order placed.

According to DoorDash, they will do everything they can to resolve these issues as they take them very ‘seriously’:

If a DoorDash Order Takes too Long to Deliver

If an order takes too long to get to you, you may be able to get a refund. You can try requesting a refund by chatting with support, calling customer support, or submitting a problem report with the order in the app.

DoorDash reserves the right not to give you a refund if an order has already been prepared at the restaurant, but they also understand that if it’s taken too long to get to you, then you may just eat something else out of hunger!

To request a refund if your DoorDash takes too long:

  1. Open the app
  2. Go to Orders
  3. Select the specific order in question
  4. Click Help in the corner of the page
  5. Under Issues, select Missing Items and select the specific items missing from your order
  6. Add additional information to the Details section
  7. Submit the report
